About Us

The Discover Birds Program is a volunteer program of the Tennessee Ornithological Society (TOS), the oldest conservation organization in Tennessee.

Founded in 1915, the Tennessee Ornithological Society is an independent, non-profit, educational and scientific organization devoted to the enjoyment, study and conservation of birds.  Local chapters hold monthly meetings, offer educational field trips and monitor bird populations in their area.  The organization publishes the scientific journal, The Migrant.

The Discover Birds Program is an effort to introduce children to birds through interactive bird walks that give children the opportunity to see birds through birding telescopes and watch bird behavior in their natural habitat.  Additionally, participants are provided with free Discover Birds Activity Books to help continue their interest and learning about birds.

The Discover Birds Program began in 2012 with the publication of the Discover Birds Activity Book. The Knoxville Chapter of the Tennessee Ornithological Society (KTOS) initiated the program when they donated the publication to all of the teacher classrooms of a single grade level at Rocky Hill Elementary School in November of 2012. The idea of taking students on a bird walk when the books were delivered launched the program, and in the 2012-2013 school year, nearly 400 Tennessee elementary school students were reached by this program.

The program additionally reaches out to scout programs, home education associations, and community education programs to bring the joy of birds into the lives of children.

Vickie Henderson is an artist, writer and photographer and the author and illustrator of the Discover Bird Activity Book.  The content of the book was the collaborative effort of a committee of educators acknowledged on the books introduction page.  Visit Vickie's website at vickiehenderson.com.
